Roland Tyson started making outerwear in his childhood bedroom in 1983, aged 17, using an old industrial sewing machine. As a young outdoor enthusiast, Roland realized that he had the passion and talent to develop state-of-the-art outdoor equipment. Soon he was designing and building gear for other Australian adventurers. In 1991, after equipping the team for its unusual first ascent of Mount Everest (a trek of over 1,126 kilometers and 8,848 meters of elevation gain from sea level to a solitary peak), Sea to Summit was born. Roland's desire to create the lightest and most durable gear would take him further into the remote Australian Outback and eventually the Himalayas. In these wild places, he could put his inventions to the test. In 1993, Roland joined Penny Sanderson, who had spent six years at Australian Geographic. Her passion for exploration and innovation was a perfect fit for Sea to Summit. She and Roland began traveling for several months each year, spending time climbing, sailing, hiking, and biking. Wherever they went, they tested products and perfected the design. Sea to Summit quickly became a successful global brand based on Penny and Roland's love of travel and design. Together, they own and manage Sea to Summit and continue to be involved in every step of the journey, from developing raw materials to delivering improved equipment to customers around the world.
