The 9090 espresso machine, designed by Richard Sapper, was the first espresso machine produced by Alessi and has become a symbol of Italian coffee culture. It was awarded the Compasso d'Oro and was the first Alessi product acquired by MoMA in New York. Designer Richard Sapper (1932-2015) was a German designer living in Italy known for his contributions to product design. Sapper's design philosophy focused on developing functional, user-oriented products. Winner of several awards and 11 times laureate of the Compasso d'Oro, he designed several classics.
