Product description

Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya and pitahaya, is the fruit of a climbing cactus. Due to its colorful appearance - a pink skin covered with poisonous green scales - it is often used to decorate buffets. Origin, characteristics and flavor This exotic fruit originally comes from southern Mexico. Currently grown mainly in South America and Asia, these dried fruit slices come from the South American dragon fruit. Pitahaya is the fruit of the forest cactus. Along with several other plants, it develops the largest flowers in the world. The flowers grow up to 30 cm long and bloom only for one night, giving off an aromatic, jasmine-like fragrance. The fruits, which grow up to 15 cm long and have white or red pulp, then grow from the flowers. The pink skin of the fruit is not edible, which is why only the flesh of the ripe fruit is air-dried. Dried slices can be stored for about a year. The flavor of dried dragon fruit slices can be described as refreshing and sweet-sour. The sweetness is very pleasant and not too overwhelming because the fruit contains more glucose than fructose. In addition, unlike kiwi, with which pitahaya is often compared due to its similar seeds, the pulp does not contain acid. The pulp is fiberless and has numerous small, black seeds. The seeds are what make dragon fruit so appealing. They give the dry pulp that special something when eaten. Valuable ingredients A fresh pitaya consists of about 90% water. It is therefore quite low in calories due to its relatively low sugar content. Its most notable ingredients are vitamins C, B and E, with vitamin E being a well-known and important antioxidant for the body.
