How to use

1) Start with a patch test: Directions hair dye has been used by thousands of people for over 30 years with no side effects, but it's still best to always do a patch test. Apply a small amount of dye to a patch of skin and leave it there for 20 minutes to half an hour. If you have no reaction, everything is fine, but if you have itching, burning, swelling or other discomfort, wash it off and stop using it. When using a dye for the first time, we also recommend doing a hair test; pick a strand of hair from the nape of your neck and apply the Directions dye to the last few inches. If the color is not what you want, find out about it before you dye your whole head.

2) Now bleach your hair: Although it is possible to achieve some very beautiful effects by applying Directions hair dye to untreated hair, to achieve truly vibrant colors you will need to bleach your hair first. We recommend the Directions bleaching kits as they include everything you need and please, whatever bleach you choose, make sure you follow the directions.

3) Apply the color afterwards: Your hair needs to be clean and oil-free before you start, so wash it with a pH-balanced shampoo, but don't condition it as conditioner can stop the color from absorbing. Towel dry your hair and then apply the color with a tint brush, applying the dye along the length of each strand. It will be easiest to start with the hair at the nape of the neck and work in the front and up. For front strands, it's always helpful to have a friend with you to make sure you apply everything evenly. You can absolutely ensure that you get completely even coverage by combing the paint.

4) Then Wait: You'll want to leave the Directions hair dye for 15-30 minutes to develop, rush it and you may not get as bright a color, leave it too long and it may come out darker or a different shade. The exact time you have to wait depends on your hair, generally thicker hair takes longer.

5) And finally, rinse: Rinse your hair thoroughly with warm, clean water. It's best done in the shower and it's best to hold your head while doing it so you don't get color on your face. Once the water is almost clear, you're done.
