What you should know about down and feathers.

What is the difference between down and feathers

The stuffing developed by waterfowl consists of feathers and down. The bedding or down is placed around the neck, chest and belly of the birds. Since this part is always in contact with water, these birds develop the down as an insulating protection against moisture. This is why the down comforter is the lightest and most breathable natural down. We can say that its function is similar to bare snowflakes, which create an air chamber inside that retains heat and insulates from cold. The spring consists of a central axis called a "rachis" or "rod". Along this axis, very fine threads are created in opposite directions.

What is the cassette system?

To avoid cold areas caused by joining the two parts of the quilt with a quilting seam, the cassette system was developed, which consists of dividing the quilt internally into individual cells separated from each other by a cellulose wall. This way, there are no seams to penetrate the comforter and create an unprotected area in the seam, but an even distribution of heat throughout the garment, while preventing the down from slipping.

Important points when choosing a duvet

Grammage (density): measures the grams of down, feathers or synthetic fibers that make up a duvet and thus indicates its thermal performance. The higher the density, the warmer the duvet. Choose the duvet according to the ambient temperature in your bedroom at night.

The insulating power is also measured by the internal composition. Goose down is the most insulating of goose feathers, duck down, duck down and synthetic fillings.

Caring for a down comforter

To ensure good maintenance of the duvet, it should be shaken weekly in a horizontal position, holding it by the ends between two people. No very vigorous movement is required. You just need to make sure that the springs are evenly distributed throughout the filling and prevent the springs from slipping. Also rotate and insert the leg section from the head section.

You can wash them once a year in the washing machine with cold water, mild soap and a gentle cycle without fabric softener.
