WAKABA COFFEE MATCHA, BIO MATCHA, ABOUT PARTNERS, ABOUT OUR MATCHA
Our story
Asuka Ohashi, the founder of WAKABA, was disappointed by the lack of authentic matcha in Germany. Many online merchants were selling inferior products or green powders from China that were falsely marketed as "matcha substitutes."
To change this situation, Asuka founded WAKABA with the mission of bringing authentic Japanese matcha to Germany. Sourcing directly from Japan and using traditional methods, WAKABA ensures that each cup reflects the true flavor and heritage of Japanese tea.
What is Matcha? What is the history of Matcha?
Matcha is a high quality tea powder that is shade grown to protect it from light. As a certified organic Japanese tea, it is extremely rare, as only 4.5% of the tea is grown without pesticides. At WAKABA, we import directly from Japan to provide high quality organic matcha at an affordable price.
About 800 years ago, tea seeds were imported to Japan from China. Buddhist monks and nobles have used matcha for centuries to enhance the effects of medicine or improve concentration during zazen meditation. At that time, tea was not yet as finely powdered as it is today. Over the centuries, through Japanese refinement and innovation, matcha has evolved into the form we know today.
Today, matcha is valued around the world as a sweet treat, a beverage ingredient or an energy booster. However, beware: only matcha produced in Japan is real matcha.
The passion for tea and the traditional craft
How our matcha is made
- To increase the nutrient content, the tea plants are grown in the shade for the last 3-4 weeks before harvesting.
- The stems and veins of the leaves are removed to improve flavor and texture.
- The leaves are ground to an ultra-fine powder using traditional stone mills to preserve the rich nutrients.
- To prevent oxidation by air and light, matcha is carefully packed in airtight containers.
Matcha growing region
WAKABA Matcha is produced in Uji, Japan with over 150 years of tea tradition. The tea leaves come from Kyoto and Kagoshima and are stored at 0°C and 50% humidity to preserve freshness and flavor. This process enhances the rich flavor and fine texture.
Ripe leaves are blended by experienced tea masters who combine tradition and modern techniques to create matcha with a deep aroma and flavor.
Each cup of WAKABA matcha offers calm and relaxation. With its rich taste and delicate aroma, you will experience the beauty of Japanese culture and craftsmanship.
